The title of my project is Supersized Tweats. This is a polling site of 3 fastfoods (McDonald’s, Jollibee and Wendy’s). This site uses Twitter to display the posts about these fastfood establishments. Polling was created using PHP-AJAX. Since not all Tweets mentioning the keyword of a fastfood resto say something about the quality of service, users will have the liberty to rank the fastfood establishment based on the posts. I’m currently having difficulty on the layout and the site seems to be slow at times. Below is the screenshot of the project:

Hi guys,

I currently doing my new proposal for the project which was suggested my Sir Rommel. Its regarding a search tool where I can get updates from two different social networking sources namely Twitter and Plurk. The interesting part here is if I can support the regular expressions and geotags in the searching process. I encountered some difficulties in the early part but I will try to solve these things..

Here is the sample screenshot of my project..

Have something you want to ask during a wave conversation? The “Answer Me” bot sometimes has answers! Have a dumb question? “Answer Me” bot has a lot of dumb answers too!

The idea for this bot came to me when I was checking wave bots that are already available and saw Wikifier which I think is a very useful bot. At that time I was on Facebook and I remembered someone posted some fail questions and answers from Yahoo Answers. This gave me an idea of creating a wave bot that could be useful and fun at the same time. The wave bot responds to questions written within an ‘<ask [question]>’ syntax on a blip. The question string is passed to the Yahoo Answers API and would return the closest question matching the query, the question explanation, Chosen Answer and the link to the answers page in a reply blip (see attached screenshot). A limitation of the program is that you cannot input non-alphanumeric symbols on your query in case you need to. It took me a lot of time to get around the unicode format problems with Python and Google App Engine and I end up stripping off non-ASCII symbols on a query. Another limitation is that you cannot really get the questions and answers that you wanted to, the result would be based on what Yahoo rated as the number one closest match to your query and answer me bot would only give you the link to that one question.

Yahoo Answers actually has a reputation of having dumb questions and dumb answers but in some queries, the question chosen answer actually hits the spot, quite informative and really gives a good answer to a question.

Hmmm..

Google wave robot? When I read about the second mini-project. I have no idea at all. So I do research regarding this matter. Hopefully, I read a tutorial on how to make a simple gadget bot using the Java language. On the beginning stage, I encountered some difficulties in implementing the project on the app engine.. But with continuously research, I actually finished it.

The objective of my bot for the class is very simple, it basically translates a word from one language to another language based on the user preferences. The languages involve in this project is quite limited. I didn’t use the Google Define/Dictionary instead I use some translating dictionaries XML like the Word Dictionary Web Service from DictService. It contains variety of translating dictionaries which can be used in the translation process.

To use my bot please add translatingdict@appspot.com in your contacts. To translate a word just use this format langfrom-langto:word

Example:

eng-ita:hello – It translates the word hello to French..

Screenshot:

Limitations:

Not all translations can be done because of the limited languages involved. In some cases, the display of the results is quite slow.

I have two favorite Google services that I use a lot: Google Define/Dictionary and Google’s Currency converter. For those not familiar with these two, just type in “define: love” or “100 usd to php” on Google search. Since the mini-project of course has to be useful, might as well do something that I can use, right? I learned that there are no Google APIs for these two services, so I just decided to do either one of them using other APIs, but using the same convenient syntax on Google wave.

I initially opted to do the dictionary bot, but the application for the available dictionary APIs are filtered manually, so by the time I received my API keys, I have already started doing the currency converter bot. So for my mini-project, I finally decided to do a currency converter bot.

So I named my currency converter wave bot Forexy, to match the Wave-y theme of the other bots (Emoticony, Sweepy, Wikify, Bloggy, etc.). There’s a free XML-RPC API available at FoXRate that I used for Forexy. More or less Forexy is for information purposes only, used more to estimate product prices found on the Internet.

Screenshot

Usage

add forex-bot@appspot.com to your contacts

type <[amount] [currency1] to [currency2]>

wait for the new blip that will respond to your query

Features and Limitations

Forexy can detect multiple queries, and can detect queries inside a text, as long as you follow the syntax. It also only accepts an input value of up to 2 decimal places. I tried my best to address all errors, but if there are still any bugs please comment them here.

This my wave robot that I created for the class.

Basically what it does is it Tweets some of the events that happened inside a wave that the wave robot belongs, provided that you “follow” the robot’s twitter account on Twitter. It tweets when there’s a new participant and it tweets all blips that has the “@twitter” Tag at the beginning. So, on what applications we use such setup?

I designed this wave robot with a corporate setting in mind, since Google wave is more into collaboration for a group of people done privately. Suppose you are a small company you have your own twitter account, you can use twitter to send info to your employees using tweets, which, I believe, is quite an effective way of communicating with employees. You can therefore notify your employees that they have been added in a new wave in Googlewave automatically using a wave robot like twitthiswavelet.

Another purpose of this wave robot is to let Wave user’s cross post to twitter using the wave robot. therefore announcements or just about any tweets can be cross-posted to Twitter using a specific syntax. In this example, adding an @twitter to your blip will notify the wave robot and instantly cross post to twitter using an pre-defined twitter account for the company.

add twitthiswavelet to you’re contact list and you can use it already, given that you also follow it on twitter It’s available on the public and the twitter account is www.twitter.com/gepolquevedo (for demo purposes only)

PS: there’s a lot more that we can do for this type of wave robot , since twitter is very rich in public information, however the API For google wavebots I think is still quite limited to a few functionalities. Hopefully I can get expand the capabilities of this wave-bot in the future.

Prior to the announcement of our second mini-project, which is a wave gadget or bot, I had no idea how Google Wave works. All that I know about it is that it looks more like an IDE than a social networking website (just my 2 cents on why it is not yet attracting a lot of users).

Fortunately, a classmate already reported about it and that brought me up to speed. Also, Google has a list of design principles for making Wave extensions, and that helped me decide on what I’m going to do. Since one of the guiding principles is to make an extension that is either useful or fun, I decided to do a game gadget.

So here’s what I’ve come up with: the Wave Word Jumble.

[screen_shot1]

(image upload/link failed)

I got the idea from a forum that I used to moderate. It had a thread for posting jumbled words, and forumers try to be the first one to unscramble them – sort of a multi-player Text Twist. My gadget automates this process and adds scoring to allow some bragging rights.

Deployment

To use this gadget, press the “Add Gadget by URL” in the upper right corner of a wave and paste http://cs291miniproject.zymichost.com/wavewordjumble.xml. Loading may take some time, so you have to wait until the gadget appears. Once it shows up, all the participants in the wave are included as players in the game.

Game Play

A shuffled word appears on top of the gadget’s input text box, and the players should aim to be first to unscramble it. The one who manages to do so will get points equal to the word’s length. After a correct answer is given, a new jumbled word will be generated. Since some words are anagrams of others, then some jumbled words may have more than one correct answer, though only one is needed.

Now, in case some of the players find the current jumbled word difficult to answer (given that 60,000 words are used here, this may not be uncommon), they can press the “Vote to Skip” button to express their intent to proceed to the next turn. A “Voted” label will appear next to the scores of the players who voted.

[screen_shot2]

If more than 50% of the players voted to proceed to the next turn, a new jumbled word will be generated. Not only is this scheme democratic, it also allows single players to escape a possible dead end (i.e. if there’s only one player, a single vote is enough to trigger a new jumbled word).

Winning the Game

Well, the game doesn’t end as long as it is active, so players can set their own criteria for determining winners. They can go on to play for as long as they want.

Known Issues

First, initialization is really slow. Well, this behavior is inherent in Google Wave itself, but my limited knowledge in managing persistent states across multiple clients made it slower.

Second and more crucial issue: sometimes, a jumbled word doesn’t appear at the start of the game. I still haven’t figured out the reason behind this – gadgets/bots are probably among the hardest to debug – but there’s a simple solution to this bug. Before adding other participants in a wave containing this gadget, the author of the wave may press the “Vote to Skip” button to ensure that a jumbled word appears. If there are already multiple participants before the gadget is added, then more than half of them should vote to start the game. Once the game gets going, generation of jumbled words is assured for every turn.

Lastly, there are some minor issues that may appear every once in a while (e.g. two words are successively generated, thus the first word is skipped), but they wouldn’t affect the flow of the game.
